7 Amusing Activities for 2 Year Old Baby

Keeping 2 year olds busy and entertained is a difficult task. We all want our children to grow up and be inquisitive and bright, but in order to do that, parents should put in some effort and appropriate activities for 2 year old children which will keep them curious and entertained. No matter how in love they might be with a certain game or a toy, sooner or later they will want something new.

If you’re hoping to find activities to keep your baby occupied for hours, we’re here to help. We’ve put together a list of amusing 2 year old baby activities which will help keep your baby busy and entertained.

1. Sensory tubs

Sensory tubs are great for children who are out of the oral fascination stage and won’t put everything they grab in their mouth. Simply take a plastic tub or a bit bigger plastic bowl and fill it with anything you want. You can use rice, bird seeds, sand, shaving cream, coffee grounds, and beans, but if you’re worried about your 2 year old accidentally putting some of these in their mouth, you can use good old shredded paper instead.

Just take the tub, place small toys inside, and cover everything with paper, rice, sand, or something else. Let the child dig in and look for the hidden treasure – it will be an excavation he won’t ever forget.

2. Make edible jewelry

This is an adorable activity you can play right before it’s time for their snack, and you can work on your 2 year old’s fine motor skills while feeding them fruit and veggies. Take as much different fruits and vegetables as you can and try to pick the ones that are bright in color: grapes, apples, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges, strawberries, etc.

First of all, thoroughly wash all the fruits and veggies you’ll be using. Then, take an elastic string and a yarn needle and encourage your kids to make their own colorful necklaces. After they show you their artwork, make a small feast and eat every single piece of your edible jewelry (except for the string, of course).

3. Play with tongs

Another great game that’s perfect for keeping your 2 year old busy and at the same time improving their fine motor skills is the game with tongs. Just give your child tongs and instruct them to pick up things using them – toys, papers, fruit, remote control…

You can even make it into a small competition and challenge them to pick more items than their friend or a sibling (or you). They will find this incredibly fun and before you know it, their hand-eye coordination will be much improved, as well as their fine motor skills.

4. Sensory bags

Sensory games are a great way to improve your child’s sense of sight and touch, to make their little grips stronger, and to leave your home mess-free (something most parents would agree is very important). For this activity, you only need a few Ziploc bags, some hair gel, and a bunch of items you can easily find at a dollar store. Fill the bag with hair gel and just throw in anything you might think your child would find interesting.

You can put in glitter and seashells, little rocks with peculiar shape and color, small plastic beads, glow-in-the-dark sticks, twigs, leaves, and little plastic dinosaur toys (not all at once, mind you). Make sure you seal and reinforce the bag with some tape, and let your two year old have fun with their cheap, mess-free toy.

5. Glowing tub

Bath time is a source of great joy for some kids while others really hate it because bath time is the introduction to bedtime, and very few 2 year olds are fond of that. In order to make bath time more appealing and interesting for children, you can try turning it into a game or a small adventure for them. One of the ways is to dim the lights in the bathroom and throw in glow sticks in the tub already filled with water and bubbles.

Kids won’t be able to peel their eyes away from the tub, they’ll have a blast playing with their favorite toys in the dimly lit bathroom, and they will be exhausted by the time they reach their beds.

6. Scavenger hunt

This is a charming activity for 2 year old children, and very convenient too because you can play it indoors when the weather is bad, in your own backyard during warmer days, or in the park or around your neighborhood. Make a list of things that are easy to find, hold your child’s hand, and ask them to find and do things from your list: something blue/red, something soft, a toy, a leaf, to spot a bird or a cat, to bring you a flower or run to touch a bench…

They will feel like little explorers, they won’t be bored, and you will get to spend quality time with your child while at the same time teaching them about the world and improving their fine and gross motor skills.

7. Practice pouring

Who says that activities for 2 year old children are just for fun? While they’re having fun and playing around, they might actually be perfecting some of those important life skills such as pouring water. This is the perfect activity for warm summer days and backyard because things will inevitably get messy at first. Still, as their skills improve, they can take their pouring game straight to the bathroom and after that right onto the dining room table.

Take plastic cups and a plastic pitcher, fill the pitcher with water (halfway at first, mind you) and let your child pour water into the cups for as long as they like. After a while, they might even get skilled enough to pour the water with one hand.

To Conclude

It doesn’t matter what season it is, children always want to play. For them, games and toys are their life, and little do they know that with some of these games they will not only have loads of fun, but they’ll also learn something about the world they live in. Sometimes, children will grow tired of certain games, even if they used to love them, and it is up to you to make up new ones.

The activities we suggested here will not only keep your 2 year old entertained, but they will help the two of you bond.
