An Easy Holiday Arrangement

Loving this idea from a late issue of Domino magazine. Opting instead for a white poinsettia, they clipped the stems, tossed the eyesore of a foil pot, and tucked each bloom into a pretty fluted vase. Easy, cheap, and elegant! Remember to carefully heat the trimmed stems over a flame, or else they won't last in water.

So you basically burn off the stem? Anyone know the science behind this?
