The Blushing Hostess on the Coupe Glass

Dear Maggie,

Oh, Dahling, the coupe never went out of style. It just depends on the host or hostess. Many champagne guzzlers experts prefer the coupe glass. And stylish girls with a dramatic flair too. Though this has been argued far and wide in the etiquette halls, there is not a correct choice of champagne glass for a table setting.

Many prefer the flute as it takes up less width on the table. In a place setting with three glasses, this is an important consideration. And when serving cocktails, the flute is perceived as easier to manage when the glass is full and one is posing standing in their Jimmy Choos. But in fact, if either glass is correctly filled, leaving about 1/3 an inch of space at the top of the coupe and about 3/4 for a flute, neither should be hard to manage.

I choose both! I have three sets of very good vintage coupes which I use for cocktails and dessert. I use flutes at the dinner table in the interest of having space left for a fabulous centerpiece and not having the whole affair crowded with stemware.

Here's to you, Maggie!

Warmly,
Blushing

I've always been partial to the coupe for its retro feel - reminds me of a Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn movie.

Love seeing Blushing on the Love List- I prefer the coupe- it requires more thought to maneuver- I prefer flats when sizzling champagne. I inherited a substantial set from Mum-12ish pale pink and more deep rose with monograms from my Gram-Nothing beats them, and they are glamorous. GT

I love them both but use flutes all the time. I inherited the coupe style but have yet to use them. I just may try them.

Mrs. E. and I are more fans of the flute. I believe them to show off the Champagne to better effect, and keep from letting too much air into the wine too quickly.

Goblets have disappeared entirely. Bond drank his Vesper cocktail from one. I think the coupe is better for Champagne cocktails.

Oh go for the coupe. Just for the retro fun. Unless of course you are breaking out the wildly expensive bubbly. Then perhaps we should all bow to substance over style.

I'm crazy about the coupe - it lets me give way to my 30s madcap comedy heroine persona. The real advantage, though, is that coupes seem to be more stable when passed on trays than their flute counterparts do - particularly important in a crush of people.

love the coupe. but see the dilemma when you are standing, it ends up being a balancing act.
