Grits are Good for You: Hominy Grill

On our last day during a recent visit to Charleston, Chris and I were told to head over to Hominy Grill for breakfast on our way out of town. Originally a barber shop in the 1880’s, it's one of Charleston’s most beloved restaurants.

Chef and owner Robert Stehling is a purist who supports local farms and fisherman, and is dedicated to tradition. If you need proof, all it will take is one bite of the fluffy buttermilk biscuits topped with ham and mushroom gravy, or the perfectly fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens. Chris had the "Big Nasty Biscut", which, true to it's name was a buttermilk biscuit topped with a whopping piece of fried chicken and drenched in sausage gravy.

I opted for lighter fare, and had by far one of the best breakfasts of my life - the huevos rancheros are to die for! Two poached eggs over black beans, a crispy shell, and topped with fresh salsa. I'd eat it every day if I could. The restaurant offers a covered patio area, which is a perfect place to have breakfast and absorb some of the warm Carolina sun. Inside, the clapboard walls, pounded tin ceiling and wide plank hardwood floors add a sense of rustic charm that’s hard to resist. If you go, don't forget to order a side of cheese grits.

I am so glad you went there!! I recommend it to everyone for breakfast! Their grits and sweet tea are to die for and I hear their shrimp and grits and out of this world. I always order one of their specials.

I recently moved to Charlotte and can't wait to make a trip to Charleston (I've never been and am dying to go). I'll have to make sure we stop at this place for breakfast for some authentic southern fare! Thanks for the tip!
