Blogger's Home Tour: Kyle Schuneman's Hollywood Hills Retreat

As is tradition here the first Wednesday of the month at The Love List, LA Designer Kyle Schuneman posts his advice to readers who write in with pressing design dilemmas. However this month, in honor of the Home Tour, Kyle graciously chose to open the doors to his gorgeous LA home instead of his traditional column, which will return in October. Enjoy this one, folks - I feel like I have "scooped" Elle Decor, Domino, and other shelter mags by publishing these gorgeous photos first. Photos by Joe Schmelzer (fantastic website, btw), captions by Kyle Schuneman.

"The bedroom and bathroom of my Hollywood Hills home creates a serene retreat from the hustle of the city lights below. I chose a dreamy shade of blue that by itself would have been too harsh for a retreat like an environment but layered with the different textures and otherwise cool colors makes for a great backdrop."

"The cool reflection of the metallic silver brought in by the feature wall behind the bed is made of tin ceiling tiles and establishes a geometric anchor to the room while still being whimsical with the play on texture."

"I added pops of apple green to bring in the lush landscape and vistas beyond to add to the harmonious mix. From the reupholstered 1950’s Sears and Roebuck lounge chair to the monogrammed pillows on the leather wrapped bed the entire room feels tailored and with the glass bedside lamps and white shag rug the different surfaces keep your eye moving."

"The walls of the bathroom are painted in an effortless whisper white with a surprising heavenly blue ceiling, the same blue as the bedroom walls, tying the two spaces together.. The tri-colored rectangular tiles create a crisp background to the floating white bowl sinks on a glass countertop as you walk in. "

"A clean and fluid color palette keeps the small space feeling open and the original black and white photos in walnut frames creates a gallery feel and mix seamlessly with the chocolate towels adorning the room. The mix of texture, color and an editing eye turn what was once a dingy and dated space into a timeless retreat."

Thank you so much Kyle - this was a really special home, and I love the idea of using ceiling tiles as a gorgeous wall statement.

I think the tin tiled walls are great too, Kyle's taste is very fresh and unexpected which is why I love his work so much.
